At Profugo, we believe the effects of poverty to be far reaching. Oppression resulting from poverty hinders many communities around the world from being able to realize their fullest potential. A person’s entire life can be hindered by the oppressive confines of economic and social barriers. Lack of power over uncontrollable circumstances leads many to give up hope for ever achieving freedom from poverty. Many depressed communities trapped by their circumstances live their entire lives under a cloud of hopelessness as a result of poverty.
As shown in the figure above, an uncontrollable event can inject a person into a vicious cycle of poverty and depression. This cycle of poverty can be perpetuated from generation to generation, but we believe this does not have to take place. When those trapped within poverty are given sustainable tools to progressively improve their own situations, the cycle can be broken. Profugo believes that preventing poverty begins with giving communities an environment free from oppression where individuals can believe in and achieve a better quality of life.
Communities just need a helping hand of a neighbor to lift them out of the oppressive effects of poverty. Profugo seeks to be a global neighbor that provides a safe space for communities to gather and work together towards a healthier and freer life. |
